Sustainability in the Way We Work

Sustainability is part of our everyday decisions. We use renewable electricity and ground-source heating, favour local and seasonal ingredients whenever possible, avoid unnecessary disposable products and continuously improve our practices through small everyday choices.

We also want to help our guests experience Koli in a responsible way by sharing our knowledge of the area’s nature, history and traditions.

You don’t need a car to enjoy your stay at Kolin Runo. Koli village, Koli National Park and many services are within walking or cycling distance. 

You can find bus connections on the Matkahuolto website and app. There are usually two weekday bus connections from Joensuu to Koli throughout the year, with additional weekend services during the busiest seasons. The nearest bus stop to Kolin Runo is Jero th Ylä-Kolintie, about 500 metres away.

Most connections require a change in Ahmovaara Monikäyttötalo (also known as Kolinportti), about 15 km from Koli village.  The connecting bus only stops where passengers have booked tickets in advance, so be sure to buy your ticket to your final stop in Koli.

Bus timetables are sometimes updated quite late, especially when seasonal schedules change, so if you can’t find a connection yet, it’s worth checking again closer to your travel date.

During the summer season, the inland cruise ship M/S Marival II usually operates between Koli and Vuonislahti, with connections to trains stopping at Vuonislahti. Bicycles are also welcome on board.

I’m Katri, the owner of Kolin Runo and your local guide. For me, guiding is above all a way of sharing this place. I want to help visitors understand Koli, not just admire its famous views.

I believe Koli is a place worth staying a little longer. When you give nature and its stories the time they deserve, you begin to notice more than the landscape – its history, unique natural features and the many stories that have shaped this place over time.

When I’m not guiding or welcoming guests, you’ll usually find me in the forest, out on the lake or planning new experiences for different seasons.
